Plan for Institutional Coordination and Reform to Support Web Accessibility at George Mason University

As a partner with WebAIM, George Mason University is charged with developing a comprehensive model for institutional coordination and reform to support web accessibility. We have come up with two and a half year implementation plan, which is broken up into three phases:

Phase I: Begin an Information Campaign on Web Accessibility

June 2001 to December 2001

  • Design an informational web site on web accessibility
  • Design a brochure on web accessibility
  • Revise web development resources pages to include web accessibility resources
  • Develop a database of Webmasters & web servers
  • Establish a Webmasters group and schedule regular meetings
  • *Plan and implement information sessions with academic and administrative departments
  • *Implement Web Accessibility stations at key locations around campus for testing sites and for training

Phase II: Develop and Deliver Training on Web Accessibility

January 2002 - May 2002

  • Develop a series of training courses on web accessibility, integrated into existing IT Training Workshops
  • Develop a Web Accessibility Certificate for GMU employees and students. (Mason web team will recommend that this be a requirement for Webmasters.)
  • *Distribute information about online courses offered by WebAIM
  • *Provide information and training to professors teaching courses in the area of web design and development in graduate and undergraduate programs.

Phase III: Implement New Policies for Web Accessibility

May 2002 - May 2003

  • Finalize policies and procedures
  • Conduct information sessions announcing new policies and procedures
  • Continue information sharing, training and technical assistance objectives listed above.
  • Pursue alternative funding sources to continue providing web accessibility training and technical support.

* Objectives that are ongoing throughout the project period

At the beginning of Phase I GMU hired a half-time Web Accessibility Coordinator to manage the daily activities of the WebAIM partnership. The Web Accessibility Coordinator became a member of the Mason Web Team. This team consists of university employees who are directly and actively involved in all aspects of the George Mason University web content and web design. During all three phases, the committee will be developing and revising policies and procedures, which will be fully implemented in Phase III.
