On mobile, support is not so good - both regarding the pick-up of aria roles like role=dialog and also regarding focus management when using Android/TalkBack or iOS/VoiceOver (I tested a version based on the scripts in the example by Nicholas C. Zakas with a number of screen readers).
Not quite sure whether that example is fully relevant to your use case but I thought I might throw in the link anyway:
