VoiceOver on iOS is one of the few screen readers that support some of the Aural CSS properties that can be used to spell out numbers, etc. https://www.w3.org/TR/CSS21/aural.html

I have a blog post that touches on this.

Subject: [WebAIM] Suggestions needed to present date and symbols for Voiceover

Hi All,

I am testing one of the financial apps.
I am having the following issues with Voiceover on iPhone:
Issue 1:
In the following scenario date is read wrong: When a user selects custom date or last 3 months in the app, the date will be displayed next to the selection in the following format '03/04/2017 - 05/04/2017-
Note: There is a space before and after the 'hyphen'
Voice over reads as:
05 slash 04 / 2017 to 2005 04 2017.
The same format is read correctly on IE11 with JAWS, NVDA 2017.2 with Firefox and Talkback on android apk.
Issue 2:
The account number is masked and hyphenated. When the masked account number starts with -x1234, Voiceover reads 'Negative'
There is a high chance for the user to think that it is a negative account.
Please suggest what is the best way for:
1. Appropriate announcement of date by VoiceOver.
2. Preventing VoiceOver considering hyphen as minus.
3. Notifying the users regarding negative accounts in all the platforms.

Thanks & Regards,
Mohith B. P.
