Chetz,

I stumbled across the "Fangs Screen Reader Emulator" for Firefox that
you may be interested in as well:
https://addons.update.mozilla.org/extensions/moreinfo.php?id=402&os=Wind
ows&application=firefox&version=1.0&go=Go

Please note that it is under development and the latest version can be
found on SourceForge at the following URL:
http://sourceforge.net/projects/fangs This may enable your students to
experience 'what it is like' and perhaps even participate in creating a
better tool for everyone.

Subject: [WebAIM] Talking web browser?

Hi,
Does anyone know of a talking (self-voicing) browser that is not
dependent on Internet Explorer? A colleague is looking for a tool that
could be used on a design course to easily enable students to experience
what it is like browsing the web while using a screenreader. The course
used to use WeMedia, and found this very good, but it is no longer
supported.

We have considered Webbie and Home Page Reader, but both of these
integrate with IE, and we cannot expect our students to have this
browser.

Any suggestions would be gratefully received!

Regards,
Chetz

Fangs doesn't speak though, right? I have had it installed and I view with
it... But was unaware of a way to make it speak. If there is one, please
enlighten me. I would love to do that. :)

No, it doesn't speak. But it does do a fair job (considering it's age, a
great job) of simulating what would be spoken by a screen reader.

My reason for suggesting it was as a teaching aid, not as a replacement
for a screen reader. By-the-way, I find that having the text version of
what might be audible makes for easier translation when composing
emails. Normally I might describe what a screen reader produces in
writing (email) in trying to get a end-user to understand why
reorganizing their web content might be a good idea. Fangs helps me do
just that and anything it 'misses' is easily discovered by using the
actual screen reader.

If you are running OSX, you can just cut and past the FANGS output into
textEdit and have OSX read it to you outloud.

On Windows, you can combine FANGS with Foxyvoice

Thanks for the recommendation for Foxyvoice! It works, although the
default "Microsoft Sam" voice is a bit primitive; However I found that
you can download the MSSAPI SDK (68MB)[0] and get additional voices -
"Microsoft Mike" and "Microsoft Mary" are somewhat clearer. This, with
Foxyvoice, gives (for me anyway) the best linearized text-to-speech
picture yet of my sites. FANGS is good too, as it emulates the Links
and Headings lists in screenreader software.

I was not able to get Foxyvoice to read FANGS output, but they're still
good free tools for this.
