I recently used the free service Jing http://www.jingproject.com/ to create
some "screencasts" only to realize that they are not accessible. I tried to
figure out if there was a way to caption them, but was not able to
accomplish this. I believe Jing creates content in Flash video.

Does anyone know of an accessible alternative. I guess I am willing to pay
for something, but would prefer open source.

Happy Holidays

Jing is more or less a subset of Camtasia with a limited production preset
designed for short quick captures. The full version of Camtasia hers support
for captioning as well as a choice of output formats. http://techsmith.com.
I use it for my order tutorials (not all of which are currently captioned
but I'm adding captions as time permits.)

We have Adobe Captivate which does screen casts and more. It also supports captioning.

General info: http://www.adobe.com/accessibility/products/captivate/
Screencast demo (showing one way to add captions): http://www.adobe.com/accessibility/products/captivate/Adobe_Captivate_cc_tutorial_demo.html

Both programs have strengths and weakness. My suggestion to try the 30 day
demos of each to see which suits best.
