Subject: error massages - which scuccess criterion fails?
No previous message | Next message →

Hi all,

I am testing a webpage and I don't know how to handle the problem with
the error messages.

If an error messages is displayed below the input field and there is no
ARIA technique (aria-describedby etc.) implemented, which success
criterion fails:

Is it 1.3.1 Info and Relationships (because the message can not be
programmatically detemined) -
or is it 3.3.1 Error Identification (because there is only visual
identification?)

Thanks,
sonja

We would fail this under 3.3.1 because the error message cannot be programmatically-determined.

If the error message identifies the failed field and describes the
error it passes 3.3.1.
If the error message appears to be related to a particular input field
based on the manner it is presented (in this case, right next to /
after the field), that relationship needs to be programmatically
determinable. Else it fails 1.3.1.
Best wishes,
