Updated Section 508 Checklist

While Section 508 hasn't been updated in nearly 10 years and growing, techniques have changed. We have recently updated our popular Section 508 checklist to reflect this. Also note that the Access Board Annual Report hints that they "plan" to release updated Section 508 guidelines for public comment "in 2010".

Jack Pickard Remembered

The accessibility field lost a friend in Jack Pickard, who passed away January 16th following a suspected heart attack. Read Ian Cuddy's tribute and the many comments from people who were touched by Jack's life. Jack's influential writing was featured in this newletter many times over the years. A true champion of standards and web accessibility, Jack will be missed.

Fangs - the screen reader emulator

Fangs is a Firefox extension that creates a text version of your page that is similar to what a screen reader would read. A new version is available for Firefox 3.6 on the Firefox extension site.

Contacting Organizations about Inaccessible Websites

The Worldwide Web Consortium (W3C) has created resources to help encourage users to contact websites when they encounter accessibility issues. The resource is currently in draft form, and comments are welcome until February 3rd.

Accessible HTML5 Video with JavaScripted captions

Bruce Lawson provides a proof-of-concept solution for captions in videos that have been embedded using HTML5.
