Actually, hard to say what is appropriate given the myriad tasks we do or
might do or have done but this may fall outside the e&IT scope anyway.

If the intent is for someone to be able to put in a few sheets, you might
want to consider the accessibility of an auxiliary sheet feeder. These
often have names like "manual input tray", "multimedia input tray", etc.
These often flip down input trays are commonly designed to hold 1-50
sheets of special paper or transparency stock. I think aiming at the
large input trays, many holding 1000, 2500, or more sheets of paper would
not be appropriate.

Subject: [teitac-hardware] paper trays

Has TEITAC addressed the question of when trays are covered and which
trays may not be covered? This is a frequent question leading to
confusion and sometimes conflicting answers. The Access Board has always
felt that if you need to put in a few sheets of color paper,
transparencies or address label stickers, that this is normal daily
operations that should be supported by 508. That would be distinct from
adding reams of regular paper in bins. This second scenario might be a
maintenance function comparable to putting toner in a copier. Do you
think there is room for improvement in the language, either in the
standards or in advisory notes, so that this is made more explicitly
clear?

See definition in Subpart A:
âOperable controls. A component of a product that requires physical
contact for normal operation. Operable controls include, but are not
limited to, mechanically operated controls, input and output trays, card
slots, keyboards, or keypads.â

See TA Guide: http://www.access-board.gov/sec508/guide/1194.25.htm#(j)
âIf the trays for storing reams of paper are not reachable, does the
copier machine meet the provisions?
Copier paper tray access is not covered under the standards because
replacing paper is considered a maintenance function, not a normal daily
operation. Operable controls include, but are not limited to, mechanically
operated controls, input and output trays, card slots, keyboards, or
keypads. The standards apply to products in their normal operation rather
than when a product may be used for maintenance, repair, or occasional
monitoring. Other tasks such as initial set-up and configuration, adding
and replacing parts, and repair and service tasks are also not covered by
the standards.â
