First, of all, while I probably concur that this term may not be as
precise as us geeky accessibility folks may like, it is widely used in
the normal operation of things. Even if we just define it by pointing
to other definitions, that is fine, but its done.

>From 07/18 draft:

1. In EIT def:
Electronic and Information Technology

Includes information technology and any equipment or interconnected
system or subsystem of equipment that is used in the creation,
conversion, or duplication
of data or information. The term electronic and information technology
includes, but is not limited to, telecommunications products (such as
telephones),
information kiosks and transaction machines, World Wide Web sites,
multimedia, and office equipment such as copiers and fax machines. The
term does not
include any equipment that contains embedded information technology that
is used as an integral part of the product, but in which information
technology
is not the principal function of that product.

6.1-E - Non-text Content

Non-text Content: All non-text content has a text alternative that
presents equivalent information, except for the situations listed below.

list of 4 items
* Controls-Input: If non-text content is a control or accepts user
input, then it has a name that describes its purpose. (See also
User Interface Components
provisions)
* Media, Test, Sensory: If non-text content is multimedia , live
audio-only or live video-only content, a test or exercise that must be
presented in non-text
format , or primarily intended to create a specific sensory experience ,
then text alternatives at least identify the non-text content with a
descriptive
text label. (For multimedia, see also
Audio and/or Video
provisions)

6.2-A - Synchronized Alternatives

Equivalent alternatives for any multimedia presentation must be
synchronized with the presentation.

Discussion: Web/Software subcommittee states needs to harmonize with AV
input

next:

8.1-B - Multimedia (Format)

When a content format supports multimedia, an encoding mechanism must be
provided to include synchronized text of verbal content, and audio
descriptions
of critical nonverbal activity displayable by a user-agent.

Why do we need to define this awful term? Have we changed something so
that we're now using the word "multimedia" in a standard? If so, where?

Thanks,
AWK
