Subject: multimedia - and Synchronized Media
Per request
Here are the notes on the topics from the meeting regarding MultiMedia
I added the places that Andrew found where we still have Multimedia in the
EWG draft for convenience.

The content in this email below is also on page

And there is a link to this page from the A/V home page at the very top.
Definition of Synchronized media
Notes from 10-31 meeting
1. we should replace the two remaining uses of Multimedia with
appropriate text
* the two remaining occurrences are:
1. Definition of Electronic and Information Technology Includes
information technology and any equipment or interconnected system or
subsystem of equipment that is used in the creation, conversion, or
duplication of data or information. The term electronic and information
technology includes, but is not limited to, telecommunications products
(such as telephones), information kiosks and transaction machines, World
Wide Web sites, multimedia, and office equipment such as copiers and fax
machines. The term does not include any equipment that contains embedded
information technology that is used as an integral part of the product, but
in which information technology is not the principal function of that
product.
2. 6-D - Interactive Elements: All "multimedia" containing interactive
elements, such as menus for selection and access to segments of the content,
that are part of the content must include verbal equivalents for menu
selections.
* SUGGESTED EDITS are:
1. For the Definition of Electronic and Information Technology change
"multimedia" to "electronic media", since this should apply to all types of
media - synchronized and other.
2. For 6-D - Interactive Elements: change "multimedia" to "electronic
media" since media with interaction is "synchronized media" and it would
sound funny to double refer. Kind of like "Audio-video with sound"
2. we should update our definition of synchronized media to reflect
that interaction makes something synchronized media because you cannot
substitute a transcript for the media if the interaction has to occur at
specific places in its playing. This also harmonizes the definition with the
definition in WCAG 2.0.
NEW PROPOSED DEFINITION
[the change between current and proposed definition is shown in bold with
square brackets around it]
Synchronized Media
Audio or video displayed at the same time as other time-based content
[and/or with time-based interactive component] that is required for
understanding [or use] of the complete presentation. The other time-based
content that the audio or video is synchronized with to meet this definition
does not include equivalents such as captions, subtitles, or video
description.
Current Definition from EWG page
Synchronized Media
Audio or video displayed at the same time as other time-based content that
is required for understanding of the complete presentation. The other
content that the audio or video is synchronized with to meet this definition
does not include equivalents such as captions, subtitles, or video
description.
Definition from WCAG
synchronized media
audio or video synchronized with another format for presenting information
and/or with time-based interactive components
