Subject: Suggestioin to use HandRaising utility to startmeeting
As was done by trial at the General meeting, my suggestion is to
Have everyone who joins the call "raise their hand" as a matter of course at
the beginning of each call rather than the awkward "did someone join"
process. I didn't participate on the last Software-Web meeting, but it hard
to imagine this process working any smoother than everybody raising hand at
beginning!! Those who are not connected announce their names! Someone who is
late - raises their hand and will get recognized!

One option that would avoid the queue being populated with everyone's
name at the beginning would be for the moderator to be given the
option to view everybody that has joined, even if they have not added
themselved to the queue. Of course only the moderator would be able to
see this. Would this fulfill the functionality you are seeking?
The problem I see with what you have proposed is that the queue must
be cleaned up after everyone joins (not a big problem) and if someone
joins late, there's no way to determine if that person wants in the
queue or is just announcing themselves.

I imagine it happening during the first, say, 5 minutes, at which time the
chair says - "OK lets clear the queue". Everybody sees the attendees as they
show up. My main reason was removing the flaky "did someone just joing"
stigma.

Jared, that would be a great idea.
If the names just get added to the moderators list as people sign on it
helps (e.g. keep the order of sign on)
That way it is easier for the chair to ID late joiners for intro, update, or
whatever.

If the tool just maintains a list of those that joined - in the order they
join - it should meet all these criteria. The chair should also be able to
ADD names to the list. (they can add -phone only after so they know they
can't raise hands.) (It could also log when they signed on and when they
signed off - helpful to know someone left - and when - if you need to update
them.
Criteria to meet
- who is on
- who just joined
- who joined later and might not know something they need to
- a list for attendance (Chair adds phone-only callers)
- was the person still on the call when we discussed xxxxx near the end.
There will be a need for some talk - since those that join the call don't
necessarily join the hands up utility. But it should cut WAY down on it
and eliminate most all of it. Also - we can ask people who sign in by
phone only to announce themselves. Everyone else can just do it by signing
on to the hands up utility.

I liked the suggestion about combo box with list of rooms--also reduces need
for chatter.

But having them ALSO raise their hand lets everybody know - not just the

It creates a lot of clutter. I think the Chair should provide a summary of
who is there just before it seriously begins. And could periodically note
late arrivals.

Visually my proposal creates no clutter. As new attendees sign in and raise
their hands, an additional name appears at the bottom of the list. Innocuous
at worst. The summary is, in effect, being provided in real time.
Debbie, is it Screen reader clutter? Is it the case that every time the tool
refreshes, or is refreshed, the screen reader starts from the top? If you
set the tool to manual refresh, would there no clutter during this "sign on"
time?

Jim
Wouldn't it be confusing to have new people who join late be put into the
list? how would you know these from people raising their hands?
I think a "who is here" button that people could press would be more
effective. Could even open in a new window.

The chair says "so-and-so" and so-and-so says "joining late". Add to her
embarrassment of joining late!
You are right - go for the innocuous signup process - (especially) if there
is a "who is here" button (link). No new windows please!

See my other note about everyone having access to a "who's here" button.

Ok
No new window. People who want one can ask for one easily enough.
