Subject: Volume Gain 2.2E - headset exemption advisory note text
TIA proposes the following for clarity. Gregg or Diane sent out a draft
earlier this afternoon.
***
Note: Headsets and earphones are not subject to this provision as long
as they use industry standard connectors that allow specialized
headsets, earphones and coupling cables for assistive listening devices
to be used in their place. 3.5mm phone, 2.5mm phone, and RJ-10 are all
examples of industry standard connectors that meet this requirement.

Can we ask the TIA folks to weigh in on the correct handset connector name?
Light research indicates that it cannot be "RJ" (for "registered jack")
anything, as it doesn't interface directly with the network, but that it is
commonly known as "RJ-9". The correct name may be "4P4C", but that's
probably going to be more puzzling than anything. We could always say "the
standard handset modular connector" and everyone would know what we meant.

We had a brief discussion in the call about what was the appropriate
standard name for the 4/4 modular connector used for phone handsets.
RJ-9 and RJ-10 was mentioned. I made a brief search and it seems that RJ-9
RJ-10 and RJ-22 are names used for this connector, but I got the impression
that there is no real RJ standard for it. The ordering of the signals in the
4 poles also varies between phones.
Can someone bring light into this area and explain the modular 4/4 connector
used for headsets and handsets and its names so that a proper name can be
selected and it is known what it refers to.
