Subject: Reach Range

On the hardware call, Rob asked if the reach range parameters in the
updated (2004) ADAAG are identical to the previous version? If, not,
what are the specific differences?

Jim Pecht here on staff at the Access Board reports that the main
differences is that old ADAAG (DOJ Standard) allows a 54 inch high and a
9 inch low side reach where the new ADA-ABA guide sets the side reach at
48 inches for the high and 15 inches for the low. This is a significant
change.

There is comparison material our web site at URL:

I have posted the relevant portion to the wiki at:

Thanks Rob. Jim Pecht also points out that from the illustrations
(figure 1 and 2) it is clear that (j) is about side reach.

CC'ing the SCCP folks since this comes from 1194.25.

Based on Jim's feedback, it looks like the DOJ Standards have the
side-reach reference so there would be no changes to the 508
requirements. That sound about right??

Thanks,

Rob

Recommending changes, or not, are at your discretion. The particulars
of 1194.25(j) are certainly within the scope of the committee.
Compatibility with ADAAG is certainly desirable!
