EWG:Draft Oct 26 Audio Information
1.2-F - Audio Information
This page is the text proposed in the Nov Plenary Meeting.
Go to the Oct 26 Draft of this Provision
Go to the Sandbox of this Provision
Version created during November plenary (Nov 16):
Products must provide a mode in which audio is not used as the only means of conveying information, indicating an action, or prompting a response. Section 255 and Section 508 treat AT solutions differently, so review section XX of this document before implementing a solution.
Notes from November plenary meeting:
Need to resolve the issue of removing "either directly or via assitive technology"
Proposal to move this and 1.2-G Visual Information to the FPC section and then deal with "directly or via AT" there.
Proposal to add "for the purpose of 508 can be done directly or via AT, for the purpose of 255, must be done directly."
Request to have the Access Board legal staff review this.
Do not have agreement on the second sentence.
Version 1, proposed text in Oct 26 draft:
All information that is needed for operation and use that is provided in audio form must also be available in visual form, either directly or via assistive technology.
Note: Audio content that includes spoken content and that is closed due to DRM such that it cannot be rendered in visual form by AT and other players must include an visual form that can be.
Version 2 created in November plenary (Nov 15):
All information that is needed for operation and use that is provided in audio form must also be available in visual form. For the purpose of Section 508, this may be done either directly or via assistive technology. For the purpose of Section 255, this must be done directly.
Note: Audio content that includes spoken content and that is closed due to DRM such that it cannot be rendered in visual form by AT and other players must include an visual form that can be.
Version 3 created during November plenary (Nov 15):
Products must provide a mode in which audio is not used as the only means of conveying information, indicating an action, or prompting a response.
EWG note: need to determine if the note is to be kept.
Comment from Sun
This is not a testable provision. It belongs in the FPC section rather than here.
Comments from ITAA
The provision must clarify “operation and use” of WHAT? A product? A system of products to solve a business problem of an agency?
Comment from IBM
Audio content is covered by 6-A - Captions and Transcripts. We need to clarify what the additional requirement is here or remove it.
Comment by Karen PS
A similar edit to the changes proposed for section 1.1, to delete the phrase: "either directly or via assitive technology"
Comments from CSD/Trace Center
- This is easily tested. Remove all audio input from user (e.g. using masking headphones) and see if they can use the product successfully. If so then all audio information needed to use product is available in visual form.
- change "operation and use" to "product operation and use" [addresses ITAA comment]
