Proposed text in Oct 26 draft:
Products with visual interfaces that display telecommunications status information (such as caller identification and similar telecommunications functions) must also make this information available for:

  • Users of TTYs,
  • Users of other text conversation systems, and
  • Users who cannot see displays.

These products must also meet all accessibility provisions for software and content.

Comment from ITI
This says that products with visual interfaces that display status info must make the info available for TTYs among others. We don't know how to do this for many classes of products (e.g. making Skype's connection information available to a TTY). This provision is making assumptions about the device that don't match the text of the provision.

Comments from IBM

  • Agree with Peter K's comment about TTYs.
  • Bullet 3 of this requirement is covered by 1.2-G Visual information for closed products and by 3-U AT interoperability for products that are compatible with AT.
  • The last sentence actually refers to the "software and content" provisions.
  • The second bullet raises testability concerns.
  • In summary, bullet 3 is covered by other provisions and should be removed. Bullet 2 is untestable and should be removed. And the requirement for providing information to TTY users should be clarified.

Comment from Sun
This says that products with visual interfaces that display status info must make the info available for TTYs among others. How do I make Skype's connection information available to a TTY? This provision is making assumptions about the device that don't match the text of the provision.
