Scenarios to Consider

Contents

SCENARIOS we should consider in structuring and wording our guidelines

1) Tablet computer made 'closed'

A 'touchscreen tablet product' that is 'set up' by an agency (or its system integrator) to serve as an info kiosk. It is bolted to a wall and the ports are sealed which prevented the ports from being used, which in turn prevents it from being "accessible" by certain disability groups.

  • is this an open product?
  • is it a closed product?
  • was it an open product at manufacture but became a closed product when the system integrator or agency closed off its ports and ability to load access software?

2) bundled and unbundled 'software #1

Another scenario which occurs regularly in the "software world" are bundled and unbundled 'software products'.

Software manufactures today can bundle (internally) software from other vendors and internal divisions and create a 'single product' that an agency can purchase. The scenario is how the manufacturer applies the applicable provisions to that new product.

3) bundled and unbundled 'software #2

Another scenario is how the system integrator (or agency purchaser) applies the provisions to a 'bundled set' of products that comply only when purchased together.

4) Airline Kiosk

An airline consortium and kiosk vendors are considering making their 'check-in kiosk' accessible to passengers with disabilities.

  • Which provisions of the 508 standards should be applicable?
  • Should they consider other standards, such as automated teller/banking machines (ATM/ABM)?

Even though 508 doesn't apply to airlines, and even though the ADA may be satisfied by accommodating individuals with 'near by assistance', this scenario is an example of the thought process a new product, although similar to kiosks used by the federal postal agency, would go through to determine which standards would/could apply,
