Hello,

I was curious if anyone has any tips on how to best use Jira Cloud as a
blind user?

I'm assuming the kanban boards are not accessible, but I'm curious if
anyone has found alternative views and workflows that would allow a blind
person to productively use the software?

I learned that a user can create tickets and add comments via email:

https://support.atlassian.com/jira-cloud-administration/docs/create-issues-and-comments-from-email/

Nice. But maybe not great?

Are there any 1st or 3rd party apps that streamline/improve the interface?

Their a11y page makes it sound like they are striving to be accessible:

https://www.atlassian.com/accessibility

I emailed them two months ago ( = EMAIL ADDRESS REMOVED = ) asking for advice, but
haven't heard back.

I have yet to read the VPAT. :(

Mostly curious to hear if others have been able to find ways to make this
software a usable and productive tool for themselves and/or their visually
impared colleagues.

Thanks!

i regularly use Jira but not the cloud version. except for tagging and some other functions in edit fields that use a list at the end of the DOM for suggestion completions I find editing tickets OK.
Our accessibility team has a “dashboard“ that includes a pie chart at the top that is fully accessible. Perhaps, if you'd like to get together we can write an article on JIRA accessibility and post it to the bats website.

Would this also apply to Jira Service Desk? I think I got the name right. I'm a JAWS user. My organization uses it for tickets, and I do have to read and process some of those tickets.

I would also like to learn what plug-ins can help JIRA be more accessible.

Thanks for any ideas,

Dear John,

What issues are you facing with editing tickets? Are you using the unstoppable plug in for Jira because if you are not using unstoppable editing tickets will not be accessible to you. If you want to talk about looking into using unstoppable you can email me off list and I can educate you on the Unstoppable product which is made by my company Addteq which is an Atlassian government solutions partner. Thanks.

Would this also apply to Jira Service Desk? I think I got the name right. I'm a JAWS user. My organization uses it for tickets, and I do have to read and process some of those tickets.

Or, if it's okay with the list mods, maybe you could keep it on list?

I'll bet I'm not the only one who would be interested in learning about your plugin.

Thanks.
Sincerely,
Nathan Clark

DOn,
I think the onPremise version is similar to the Cloud version, but only updated as often as the client wants it to be. Perhaps you are on a very old version, because my onPremise copy has improved in accessibility significantly since in the last 5 years.
I have started to create a couple of AppleScript tools to speed me through using Jira though, and I would not mind doing the same with JAWS and perhaps even a NVDA plugin.
Jonathan

Best wishes,

Jonathan Cohn

Or, if it's okay with the list mods, maybe you could keep it on list?

I'll bet I'm not the only one who would be interested in learning about your plugin.

Thanks!
David

Thanks.
Sincerely,
Nathan Clark

Hi,

I use Jira cloud successfully with NVDA. Normally the functions I perform
are creating tickets, editing them, and generating reports.

I have also seen its accessibility improve over the time recently.

Tagging users is a bit of a challenge, and a few fields remain unlabelled
but I learnt it's the configuration team issue as opposed to a product
issue.

Also, I am not aware if our backend uses some plugin, is there a way to
learn that from its UI?

Thanks,
Vaibhav

Thanks for sharing!

I watched the video and noticed I can do all the things demonstrated in the video with JAWS 2022 without any special plug-in.

Is there a video of what can be done in Confluence? Confluence seems to have a cluster of issues when dealing with creating and reading Confluence articles with a screen reader. So much so that our team is moving away from Confluence.

I've never used our instance of the JIRA Help Desk on the administrative side, but that might be another good thing to demonstrate in a video. I've heard that lots of blind folks struggle with that interface.

Is your product a JAWS scriptset and NVDA add-on? Can it be used with both JAWS and NVDA? The video just talks about JAWS. I heard no reference to NVDA in the video.

I worked with the R&D team at Atlassian back in 2017 to try to help them understand the issues using their products with a screen reader and have noticed a slow shift towards adherence to more accessible UI design principles and WCAG compliance. I say slow because we often see UI changes on a monthly basis but there can sometimes be regressions in the UX for screen reader users.

Again, thanks for sharing! I didn't see a reference to pricing on your site. Can you share that publicly? If not, no worries, I am happy to continue fumbling along with JIRA - since that is what I use on a daily basis in the team I work with at our university.

Take care,
David

I don't use Jira myself, but my husband tried to obtain a license for Unstoppable. Back then, Unstoppable informed him they couldn't issue individual licenses. Since his company has over 2000 Jira users, it didn't make sense for them to purchase a collective license as he was the only user who needed Unstoppable. He has since managed to use Jira without the pluggin.

Is it now possible to purchase individual licenses for Unstoppable?

Hi David,

With my experience all the shortcuts you would use for MS Word editor can
be used while editing/creating a document in the Confluence Web. But yes,
doing larger operations with the document is a rather slow process with a
screen reader.

Thanks,
Vaibhav

Thank you to everyone for the help! This thread has been very helpful and
informative. It's great to hear that I'm not the only one on this group
wondering the same thing about Jira/Atlassian products.

I will be sharing this thread with my peers and the management on my team.
I'm hopeful that we will be able to improve the Jira experience based on
the tips/advice and tools shared in this thread.

I will also reply to the email I sent Jira's a11y support team with a link
to this thread.

Thank you to everyone for the help and replies. This list has been a life
saver for me. :)

I'll report back my team's findings.

“Jira admins can configure their cloud apps to receive and process
emails. Jira Work Management and Jira Software can receive emails from
licensed users to create issues or add comments and attachments
automatically.”

2. Custom Jira a11y dashboard

(Tip via Jonathan Cohn)

Create a customized accessibility dashboard with shortcuts/links/data
that streamlines navigation and tasks a VO user would need in order to
be productive.

Docs: What is a Jira dashboard?
https://support.atlassian.com/jira-software-cloud/docs/what-is-a-jira-dashboard/

“Dashboards are designed to display gadgets that help you organize
your projects, assignments, and achievements in different charts.”

3. Unstoppable by Addteq

(Tip via Nathan Clark)

Product page:
https://www.addteq.com/products/unstoppable/

“An app for the visually impaired that provides accessibility to
Atlassian Jira, Confluence, and Jira Service Desk/management.
Unstoppable is used by numerous US Government agencies including:
NASA, USDA, NSA, US and international banks (to name a few). For a
free demonstration, please privately contact
< = EMAIL ADDRESS REMOVED = >.”

Here is the Jira product page on the Atlassian Marketplace:

Note: Unstoppable does not have single-user licensing as an option.

4. Write AppleScript/Automator scripts to speed up repetitive tasks
when using Jira

This would require the end user to know how to code, or be able to
relay desires to a developer that could improve the experience for
them.

2. Hosted Jira: Except for tagging and some other functions in edit
fields (ones that use a list at the end of the DOM for suggestion
completions) I find editing tickets OK. (via Jonathan Cohn)

3. Jira cloud has been used successfully with NVDA for creating
tickets, editing them, and generating reports. (via Vaibhav Saraf)

4. JAWS 2022 has been used successfully (hosted? cloud?) (via David Engebretson)

5. Accessibility has improved recently, tagging users is a bit of a
challenge, and a few fields remain unlabelled but this is probably a
configuration team issue as opposed to a product
issue. (via Vaibhav Saraf)

with occasional regressions for screen reader users) towards adherence

Hello!

More (outstanding) questions:

1. What widgets do blind folks use/find helpful on a custom Jira dashboard?

2. In addition to Unstoppable, are there other plugins (open
source/free/pay) that can help Jira be more accessible?

3. Has anyone found any 1st or 3rd party iPhone/Android apps that are
a11y friendly?

4. Anyone have any experience with speech input for Jira? Gary Morin
uses Dragon Naturally Speaking and was curious if others had
advice/tips to share for people with dexterity impairments (i.e.
feedback not tied to sight/vision)

Thanks!

Yesterday I found a page for create issue in Jira Cloud:

https://<company>.atlassian.net/secure/CreateIssue.jspa?issuetype010&pid013

Where issuetype is the Issue Type ID (bug, new feature, task, etc).

... and pid is the Project ID.

In order to get the IDs, I was able to visit the above page, click
next and then inspect the dropdowns to get the IDs needed for issue
types and project ids.

I was thinking bookmarks for each issue type could be a nice shortcut
for a screen reader user?

Also, for a custom dashboard widget JQL, this filter will show issues
in a current sprint for the current user:

project = BP AND resolution = Unresolved AND sprint in openSprints()
AND assignee = currentUser() order by created DESC

Finally, here's JavaScript for a bookmarklet to go to an issue in Jira Coud:
