Hi:

I just went to http://www.lhsl.com/ <http://www.lhsl.com/>; , Scansoft's
Corporate website (developers of Dragon Naturally Speeking) and according to
their product details, XP is supported. Maybe your student's current version
is not but if you are going to purchase something, consider upgrading. The
only other similar product I was familiar with was Lernout and Hauspie but
they have gone bankrupt.

Subject: Fw: Dragon Speech and Voice pas with winXP

Hello Everyone,

I have a student with Parkinson's who sometimes has trouble typing in his
distance learning classes. He uses Dragon
speech and Voice pad but says that both are incompatible with winXP. Does
anyone have a suggestion for what might work in this case?

Thanks,

Can it possibly be that his computer doesn't have enough RAM? The voice
recognition programs use a lot of RAM so the more you have the better.
Getting more RAM is not expensive either.

Hello Becky,
Here is a link of more information with many different input devices:
http://snow.utoronto.ca/technology/products/voice-recognition.html
parkinsons may also present voice recognition problems since speech can
be involved.
Here is something that makes the keyboard bigger:
http://www.fentek-ind.com/bigkey.htm
Then Windows XP also has some accessibility features built in such as
sticky keys
There are also word prediction programs that may also help
Parkinsons causes tremors of the hands which will interfere with how
they type or use the mouse. Their control decreases over time and
eventually speech may be impaired. Thus you need something larger and
easier to manage such as larger keyboard or keys that are slower to
respond than the normal typing speed.
Good luck!
