Subject: accessible web photo gallery?

Hi folks,

Can anyone recommend an effective strategy (software+workflow+???) to
generate an accessible photo gallery?

The web gallery in Photoshop seems to be a good way to do, any other
(preferably free) recommendations?

Google's free Picasa doesn't seem to work, or, at least I can't figure
out how to have Picasa create ALT text for images without extra HTML
editing. The captions that you can add Picasa adds update the IPTC info
on the images, but don't generate an alt tag in the HTML.

Thanks,
Peter

It's actually quite an interesting concept, accessibility of a slide
show. I guess, though as well as alt text to allow people to decide if
they want to see more of a particular image, you'd really need a
magnifier to allow people to have a good look.
I'd have thought that this would be the sort of thing where a certain
amount of pragmatism, rather than following the rules totally would
determine what's done. While adding alt text would "get it through",
for many visually impaired users, they may have to use the alt text to
decide if the thumbnail is worth seeing full size. However, for many,
even full size might not be enough, they might need some form of
enlargement over & above the full size.

Thinking about other aspects of accessibility, I'd fully agree that a
system like scooch is good. I was going to suggest the sort of
template that Craig Grannel has used
http://www.snubcommunications.com/iceland/ - though that one isn't the
best of his. (He's got another template somewhere in which the
thumbnails aren't touching) The alt tags rather than using the title
of the photo are just "click to enlarge".
I think that the keeping everything on the page, that he & Scooch do
make it much easier to use for people with cognitive difficulties (&
many others), than getting a new window to open.

He's not got the magnifier though that I want ... something like the
one at http://persistent.info/files/20040508.magnifier/

I'd be interested to see what others have to say, as I think it poses
quite a few accessibility issues.

PhotoStack (.org) is 85% of the way there. I had yet another
discussion (this time f2f) with Noel D. Jackson, the young
whippersnapper who develops it, about the importance of alt texts
just last week.

Back in the day I would have recommended Flickr as a stopgap measure.
But with its new gamma release (sic), though I still use it I am not
undisillusioned.
