Hello,

We caption streaming video for Real media (using SMIL, RT and the associated RM file). The content is delivered from a Helix (Real) Streaming Server.

When the files are streamed, we can watch the video straight through from beginning to end and the captions remain perfectly in-sync. However, if we scan forward/backward, the captions fall terribly out of sync.

This does not happen if we play the files directly from a local desktop computer. We can scan forward/backward or play the video straight through -- all captions remain perfectly in-sync. The problem only occurs when the files are delivered from the streaming server.

Does anyone know of a solution to this?

PS: We are running the most recent version of Helix (Real) streaming server. We outsource captioning to Automatic Sync who provides us with the SMIL and RT files.

Thanks for your thoughts,
Janet

It's been a LONG time since I've dealt with Real captioning, but are
your captions being streamed from the streaming server? If so, the
delay/buffer is probably not the same for the caption file and the
media file. You can move the caption file (.rt) to a standard web
server so they are not streamed or buffered and the captions SHOULD
remain synced with the video.

This may not work, but it's the only suggestion I can think of.
