I have been working with a group of students to build a tool help people learn about captioning Flash Video.

The following website has the results of there work.

http://icaption2.cita.uiuc.edu/

The application was built using Adobe Flex Technology and so is not very accessible to assistive technologies, but there is basic keyboard support for all the functions.

If you are working with Flash video the students would love to have your feedback about your experience using iCaption2 to create captions and how the tool could be improved to make it easier for you to create captions.

Thank you for your help,
Jon

My apologies to all for my previous message it was a combo of a reply that
my only suggestion would be to make the tool accessible and a tweet about a
web site that (compared having a baby and designing a website) got garbled
together. Again my apologies I meant no disrespect to anyone.

This sort of response is wholly unhelpful and inappropriate. Lists such as
this one (and this one in particular) often have subscribers who come from
the entire spectrum of knowledge and experience. Responses like this one
typically scare "Newbies" away from posting questions or comments, lest they
be attacked.

This list is probably the longest lasting discussion list for Web
accessibility and helped me personally in many ways when I was first getting
into web development and accessibility. It wouldn't have lasted so long or
been so valuable if calling people "stupid" was considered acceptable.

Last, you may be well advised to research who Jon Gunderson is and what his
contribution to accessibility has been before you attack him.

Hi John,

I was going to check it out to look at the basic keyboard functions,
but Voiceover couldn't interact with the page at all. I know you said
that it isn't accessible, but soemthing about basic keyboard
functions? If those things work with Jaws or Window Eyes, the page
wasn't accessible with Voiceover. Just thought I'd add that little
tidbit if it helps the students. I think its awesome that students are
getting involved with accessibility.

Randi,

In my experience, VoiceOver doesn't work well at all with Flash & Flex. IMO,
Adobe's done a great job of working toward improving Flash & Flex
accessibility by providing support for MSAA. In the case of VoiceOver, I
think more of the blame rests on Apple for not also supporting MSAA.

For JAWS users, Adobe provides JAWS scripts at
http://www.adobe.com/accessibility/products/flex/jaws.html which should help
- provided of course the Flex app was created properly.

Yes, Voiceover has some catching up to do. But the fact that in every
new OS with Apple, Voiceover is included at no extra charge, and the
fact that out of the box, and Apple is accessible, sold me right off
the bat. ;) Didn't mean to deter from the Flash conversation. Now that
I know its most likely Voiceover and not Flash, I'll look out for
improvements from Apple.

Tried to visit the page in Safari but it does not display.

It looks like there are a couple of code problems in the page... an
extra </script> tag and a *second <body> tag in the middle of the
page, right before the <h1>Overview</h1> element.

Don't know if that has effected anyone else, but you might want to
clear it up.

Maybe its an Apple thing, as I couldn't view the site either.

I wasn't going to mention my Safari problem, sine I eventually go to
the page through Firefox, but when I saw your message, I dug a bit
deeper.

Are you running Voiceover in conjunction with Safari? Does it work
with other browsers as well? If the browser can't parse the code, then
it makes sense you would get nothing, which is exactly what I see on
screen... blank, white nothingness.

I only use Safari thus far. I think I might check with Mac
Vissionaries about Firefox compatibility. Hadn't thought about it
being a browser issue and not a VO issue. Hmmm. I wish we had some
other VO users on this list. Thank you for bringing up Safari though.
Its great how other issues are mentioned throughout a thread on
another issue. :)

I believe either the current version or beta version of Opera may work
with VoiceOver. I haven't had time to try it out though.

Now, if the day were only 24 hours longer, I might actually get the
chance to do that. :)

Thanks!

I only use Safari thus far. I think I might check with Mac
Vissionaries about Firefox compatibility. Hadn't thought about it
being a browser issue and not a VO issue. Hmmm. I wish we had some
other VO users on this list. Thank you for bringing up Safari though.

Eh?

The responsibility rests entirely with Adobe for developing software on
the Mac GNOME platforms that does not use the native accessibility APIs
available on those platforms, not with Apple for not attempting to
somehow port an obsolete accessibility API from Windows.

Similarly, if a Flash developer creates a Flash app and does not make
use of the Flash accessibility API Adobe provides, and it consequently
proves unusable with JAWS for Windows, that's the individual developer's
responsibility not Adobe's.

Adobe have made it pretty clear that the reason the Flash plugin doesn't
support the OS X accessibility API is that they don't think assistive
technology on OS X is "mature" not because of Apple not trying to
somehow emulate MSAA:

Yay! Thank you for sticking up for Apple. I do love it, and my novice
leads me to never know if something is Apple's fault or not. So you've
helped me see it more clearly.

Thank you,

This is my first foray into developing with Flash/Flex technology. Part of the project for me was to learn more about Flash/Flex technology accessibility. But the tool seems to be useful to some people for creating captions for Flash FLV files and I hope that in the future the tool itself will be more accessible itself. Flex technology seems to have some limitations in keyboard support that only came out after the students started the project, so it has been a learning process for me. But rather than throw the baby out with the bath water, I decided to see if the captioning interface was useful to people trying to create captions.

I do appreciate feedback though on the tools features and if people have suggestions on how it would be more useful to them.

Thanks,

I received a message from someone who is famiilar with Adobe technology and they said the problem was with the AIR 1.x technology for screen reader compatibility and not the Flex technology itself.

This does not fix the problem, but helps at least understand where the problem lies in the system.

The page should now work. There was some improper coding on the page. Shame on me.

I don't know if you can view this if you're not a member of Mac
Vissionaires, but there's a discussion about Flash that doesn't make
sense to me, but might make sense to you.

http://groups.google.com/group/macvisionaries/browse_thread/thread/ad3717a07337f81f#

Maybe you can view the forum if not a member, so if this link doesn't
work, try just looking at Mac Vissionaires, the subject says something
about Flash.

Just thought you might be interested. :)

Here's what it said:

So this is obviously talking about the Mac, but I thought your
technical brains might understand Open Source and what not.
