Hi,
Does anyone here have experience in publishing accessible e-books? I would
be grateful for advice, particularly around the best software for creating
e-books and some tried and tested guidelines.

I would highly recommend looking at EPUB, version 3 only...Version 3 is, in
my view, much better in terms of accessibility. It is based on HTML5 and
has the Daisy component as well-a powerhouse format.
Plus, someone just made me aware that Harper Collins just went all EPUB 3
this month, huge thing...I believe this is where all will go eventually.

Calibre is really good, but only does EPUB 2...which is too bad, because it
is a great, easy to use program.
As well, in terms of readers it is pretty good today. Take a look here for

If your book contains images, I suggest checking out the resources from DIAGRAM. The site is:

There is information on how to describe images and some examples.

I second the EPUB 3 endorsement. The ultimate accessibility of the final
product depends heavily on how the document is created and how it is
prepared for EPUB, though. And for that I recommend InDesign.

but it doesn't look as useful as yours.
We are at the info-gathering stage. We've found plenty of general info, but
I thought it would be worth getting intel from people that have been
through the process of publishing an e-book and can recommend tools and
processes that worked for them.

Hi all. I'm weighing in this discussion a bit late here, but I was wondering what y'all think of Apple's iBooks implementation on the Mac if any of you have tried it? I've read in a few placesâincluding Apple themselvesâthat iBooks is now accessible as of OS X Yosemite. Just this morning I tried it out for myself, and I'm very impressed so far. I was able to read part of Jonathan Mosen's book about ACB Radio, and I bookmarked my place because I had other things to do. But it seems to be very good in terms of VoiceOver performance.
