I'm looking for some advice on how best to design a site map that is easily
accessible.

For info, the current version is here:

http://www.nationwide.co.uk/sitemap.asp

I am inclined to go for a simpler layout using unordered lists and indenting
where appropriate. Naturally, I will make sure that font sizes are not fixed
and so on.

So, given that I am thinking of using <ul> <li> and so on, any tips?

Early stages at the moment, so any advice greatfully received.

The easiest and most useful thing to include is meaningful alt attributes with
your area elements.

Simpler would be better I feel. Even looking at the current map is a
bit confusing and all over the place.

Yes, nested <ul> seems appropriate to me. I wouldn't use one great big
list though, breaking it up with some <h2> elements for the main
headings would aid navigation.

Another thing to consider about that page is the onchange <select>.
Try navigating to another page using the select *just* using the
keyboard in IE - have fun :)

I'm glad that there's a UK financial company actually paying attention
to accessibility, some many other sites are utterly dire as I found
out on a recent trawl around some others.

For instance you've got HSBC's request information form that allows
you to get Braille, large print and audio cassette versions of
literature - but to get to the form you need a modern, script-enabled
browser!

And then there's C&G's accessibility page where they don't allow you
to tab through links - http://www.cheltglos.co.uk/accessibility_0.html.

Cheers
