I heard on the news this morning that a stand alone bill was passed in
Congress yesterday that in effect guts the ADA.

Does anyone have specific information on the bill and how does this affect
other legislation in the US like Section 508, and education based
accessibility laws?

Cheers, Karen

Hi Karen, the bill passed the US House of Representatives. Here is an article
https://www.adatitleiii.com/2018/02/house-passes-bill-to-amend-title-iii-of-the-ada-in-attempt-to-curb-drive-by-lawsuits/

It affects physical ADA issues at this time. Some physical ADA issues are life threatening in my experience such as the underside of steps that are not portion off to prevent people who are blind or visually impaired from hitting them with their heads. It does not impact other parts of the ADA, Section 508, or CVAA.

It technically has nothing to do with Section 508 or web. I did write a
piece with a friend of mine in Europe when it was first introduced about
how attacks on disability rights in general impact feelings towards web
accessibility:

https://webdevlaw.uk/2017/09/29/h-r-620-and-the-u-s-assault-on-web-accessibility/

It is a very short bill that basically mandates "education", makes more
complicated and lengthy the process of filing a complaint, and makes it
very difficult for force a resolution even if your complaint is found to be
valid. Also, it mandates education without actually increasing funding,
which means there will be less funds for enforcement.

Fun times.

Recent messages on this topic suggest that H.R. 620 does not take aim at web accessibility.

The evidence I'm aware of seems to indicate that it could directly impact the web, too.

See http://stulta.com/forumo/archives/2288 for my interpretation of the situation. Comments welcome.
