Yes, I've tested it with a few documents. The tagging is the same as in Office for Windows.

Duff - I think the intent in using that method of tagging is to make tagged PDF available from their mobile apps as well. It does use the same specifications as the Windows tagging tools.

This link from Microsoft indicates that PDF tagging is available on the Mac version of Word 2016 build 15.23.1 and greater.

Sadly, not yet (on the desktop). :-(

I know, I know…

That said, if you have access to Adobe's online services (which comes with their subscription model for Acrobat), you can upload your well-structured Word file and get back a (reasonably) well-tagged PDF.
