Need Php Help With Vallidating Users

Hi.
got a form, with a php script to enter a username, and password, then when
you click login, it logs in and shows you a message, saying the person
logged in successfully.
and shows the current time.
but now need a function, to check to see if the correct user name and
password has been entered, and to show a error message, if the wrong info
been entered, returning you to that element on the form, and then another
function, whether to allow the person in or not.
if any one has got any examples, been looking around on php.net and
google.com, but a lot to do with my sql, and php, and only want php.
let me know asap.
