Hi,
Does anyone know of a talking (self-voicing) browser that is not
dependent on Internet Explorer? A colleague is looking for a tool that
could be used on a design course to easily enable students to experience
what it is like browsing the web while using a screenreader. The course
used to use WeMedia, and found this very good, but it is no longer
supported.

We have considered Webbie and Home Page Reader, but both of these
integrate with IE, and we cannot expect our students to have this
browser.

Any suggestions would be gratefully received!

Regards,
Chetz

The next version of Opera has quite good voice support (both for reading
pages and actually controlling the software via voice commands).

I've taken the beta for a spin over the weekend, and it looks solid
enough.

http://www.opera.com/download/?ver=8.0b1

Opera's output may not perfectly match what screenreaders or other
voicing browsers may read out, but it's quite good for giving an idea
to students and colleagues...

Where is the option to read out text?

Haven't got it installed here (yet), but I seem to recall that it's
assigned to the 'V' key.

Does IBM's Home Page Reader suffice? You can download a complimentary
trial.

To follow up on this: you need to install the beta, then go to Tools >
Preferences > Voice and check the "Enable voice" box. This will prompt
for a second, much smaller download for the components. After this,
voice options should be available. See
