Hello,

A friend of mine is looking for a Flash-based accessible (keyboard, screen
reader, etc.) media player that also has a scream-lined means of adding
captions, such as via an XML file. He's seen a couple of players, however
the interface was not accessible.

Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Thanks,
Jennison

There's the default player created by Flash CS4's FLVPlayback and FLVPlaybackCaptioning components ... it does all that, using DFXP data for the captions.

The JW FLV Player
(http://www.longtailvideo.com/players/jw-flv-player/) is the most
accessible and powerful player that I've seen.

Jared,
I can see why you'd say that the JW player is more powerful since it offers audio description and sign language toggling for users and that would need to be added to Adobe's FLVPlayback player, but is that also the basis for the 'most accessible' part of your comment for the player? I want to make sure that the FLVPlayback/FLVPlaybackCaptioning components are as accessible as they can be, and I believe that for the features that it has (e.g. not AD or Sign lang) that it is as accessible as anything out there or more so.

What else are you seeing?

Thanks,
AWK

Yes, the audio description and sign language features of the JW Player
certainly can enhance accessibility for people that want those
features. If you're just looking for a standard, accessible player,
there's not much difference between the ones we've discussed. But the
JW Player offers tremendous amounts of customization, skins, a very
cool display wizard
(http://www.longtailvideo.com/support/jw-player-setup-wizard), file
protection, playlists, plugins
(http://www.longtailvideo.com/addons/plugins) and many other features
that might be useful. Perhaps best of all, it's free and open source,
unlike the FLVPlayback and FLVPlaybackCaptioning which comes with
Flash CS4.

Ah, well it is free and open source you want you might want to take a look at the Open Source Media Framework - Adobe has contributed most of the code from the FLVPlayback component to this project. (http://opensource.adobe.com/wiki/display/osmf/Open+Source+Media+Framework)

With FLVPlayback you are provided the source and allowed to make any modifications to it you want anyway, but there may be other limitations in the license that prevent you from doing some things that you want to with that code.
