Subject: Batch conversion from word to accessible PDF?

We have to convert hundreds of Word docs into PDFs for our
website. We have found tools which will allow us to batch the
process, but not any which will allow us to tag the PDFs for
accessibility. Are there any tools which allow for batch
conversion of word doc into accessible PDF? Windows, Mac, or UNIX
is fine.

Maybe this is also possible with OpenOffice.org:

We looked into that, but "batch create from file" doesn't list
Word doc as a supported format, and the batch processing utility
doesn't list "create from file" as an option. We looked through
the help into the tool on the CS4 version of Acrobat, and
couldn't find any way to batch convert Word documents into PDF.

In acrobat pro the path is File > Create PDF > Batch Create Multiple files. From there you will enter a Wizard that will allow you to select the files. As long as your conversion settings are set to create tagged PDFs you will get tagged PDFs as an output. You will need to make sure that the word documents were created correctly (structure, tables, images) or you still won't have accessible PDFs. You may also need to do some additional work to the tables and add language attributes to all of the resulting documents.

Is this wizard supposed to allow word docs? If so, then it's no
longer a question for this list, but one for Adobe support. :)
We don't see Word as an option in there, and it won't let us
select docs.

Sadly we have no control over that; these are student and faculty
scholarship, and are probably mostly poorly created. But we can
make a best effort.

You don't see "Microsoft Office Word" as an option?
What version of Acrobat are you using?

For posterity and the sake of those browsing the archives, I
should note that entering I took this conversation off-line and
determined that Acrobat Professional for Windows does have this
feature. We are still investigating to find out why Acrobat
Professional for Mac did not.
Also, thanks, Christophe, for the suggestion of OpenOffice. I'm
going to look into that as well in order to increase our
flexibility.
Thank you very much, all,
-Deborah
