Hi,

Is anyone familiar with Solona (http://www.solona.net/about), which
provides a service for solving CAPTCHAs? If so, I would appreciate
comments on this and how it compares to other solutions, such as Webvisum
(http://www.webvisum.com/).

I am not looking for sales pitches. I am interested in genuine user
feedback. Expert opinions are also welcomed.

Best regards,

Catherine

I tried using Solona once and it was rather cumbersome to get the screen shot. However I use a Mac, so the instructions didn't quite work. Their customer support was great though; they helped to figure out the commands for Mac. I haven't used it since because it's faster for me to try an audio captcha a few times. Luckily I haven't run across an unsolvable captcha that absolutely had to be solved, or else I'd use them again.

I haven't used the other once because Firefox doesn't work with Voiceover, but I know a lot of Jaws users who swear by it. Hope they chime in for you.

Yeah poor Solona. I think its days are numbered. The fellow who was
manning it appears to be ill.

I looove WebVisum. Unlike Solona, unless it's broken, it will solve your
Captcha and it makes very few errors. I highly recommend WebVisum, but
it does require Firefox.

PP: Both Solona and Webvisum are excellent solutions. When Solona has
worked, it has done a fantastic job, relying on a human volunteer to provide
solutions to CAPTCHA. Its greatest advantage is that it could work
system-wide without relying on a particular browser and for both Windows and
OS X. Its greatest disadvantage is that it relies on a single human
volunteer to operate it. Despite efforts, it never attracted many
volunteers. For the past six months, the administrator and chief volunteer
has been ill. Because of it, Solona has been off line. Wevvisum works quite
well in firefox. I have always been able to solve CAPTCHAS when using the
extension. It relies on the terk model. Its down side is obvious. Firefox is
only accessible under Windows and Linux. For those users who rely on JAWS,
Firefox is not as well supported as IE under Windows.

Hope this helps.

Regards,

Pratik

The latest that I heard is that the Solona program is no longer active due
to the illness of its creator. It used volunteer operators to solve captcha
when users submitted them. The drawback to it was that there was not always
a volunteer operator to solve captchas when they were submitted. Webvisum
is an automated program in which a computer receives the submitted captcha
request and sends it back to the originator. I attempted to use Solona and
found the process very confusing, although I was told that it was easier if
people were using Qwitter. As I am not I did not try it. I have been very
satisfied with Webvisum and use it quite frequently. The only drawback is
that it can only be used with Firefox as it is a Firefox add on. Firefox is
not my preferred browser as there are still some bugs with JAWS that need to
be addressed in their interaction. hope this helps although a bit late.
