Hello everyone!
I'm testing some PDFs with NVDA screen reader and the whole document is read by NVDA, but the page doesn't change, it remains on the cover page, as NVDA reads through the document.
Is this considered non-compliant or is there a setting the change to make it toggle along as it reads?

Thank you!
Claire

Does the document have any form controls?
And if so, when you navigate to those form elements, does the page change?

No, it's just a document with a cover page and then content.

Claire,

I think that is the normal flow for NVDA reading through a PDF. It assumes that you're listening to the document being read, not reading it with vision.

On trying an accessible PDF with 20 pages using Acrobat Reader just now with NVDA I clicked Insert+down arrow and it read to the bottom them kept on reading the next page content. If it was on a list item and I hit "I" for next list item or "h" to jump to the next heading it would go there and refresh the visible page that it was now on.

NVDA seems to do the same with my setup for web pages where it may show the visual highlight as it reads down the page but then will keep on reading to subsequent pages without the visual indicator being on the pages that follow.

The following is ChatGPT‘s opinion

Hello Claire! It seems like the document may lack proper structure or navigation landmarks. You might want to check if headings and other structural elements are appropriately tagged in the PDF. This can help screen readers navigate through the document more effectively.

Are there headings or links in the document? Or is it plain text?

The document is tagged properly and the reading order is solid. All content is read by NVDA, the page just doesn't change as it's read.

Go to preferences for the adobe application, then "reading", then look at
the "screen reader option" of "page vs. document" and look to see if it is
set at "only read the currently visible pages."

I just ran JAWS in 40-minute-mode and JAWS also read it while automatically changing pages as it reads. So now I'm even MORE curious about why NVDA won't to it, ha!

What's the full version of Windows 10 you are using?
What's the full version of Acrobat Reader DC you are running? Is it 32 or 64 bit?
Why aren't you running JAWS 2024 if you are only running it in 40 minute mode?

Thanks,
David

Hi Claire,

In PDFs, the page scrolls visually for me with NVDA running. No matter
how I navigate, Arrow keys, Tab key, Quick navigation keys I can see
visually the page changes along with NVDA announcing the change in
page number as I navigate.

Being a low vision person myself, I always like to know on which page
I read a perticular piece of information the page and helps while
discussions and screen share with others. Please check your NVDA
settings. In the NVDA menu, go to Preferences>Settings - Vision. Here
select all the checkboxes in the Visual Highlight group. Save your
changes and this should hopefully help.

Best Regards,
Priti Rohra

Windows 10 Pro - is what my Windows specifications tell me
Adobe Reader DC 32 bit
I honestly rarely use JAWS because I only have the trial version and it's inconvenient with my workflow, so I haven't taken the time to update the version. I just used it the double check this file.

I've noticed this behaviour with JAWS as well and there doesn't seem to be a rhyme or reason as to which documents this happens on. Additionally, I've found that JAWS will suddenly, and randomly, start reading without advancing the pages. It doesn't matter how many pages are in the document or whether it has form controls or not.

It is PDF!

Cheers, Karen

Hello everyone!
I'm testing some PDFs with NVDA screen reader and the whole document is read by NVDA, but the page doesn't change, it remains on the cover page, as NVDA reads through the document.
Is this considered non-compliant or is there a setting the change to make it toggle along as it reads?

Thank you!
Claire

For what it is worth I was able to reproduce your findings with NVDA 2023.1
However I found that this only applied when using the NVDA key plus downarrow )Read all) functionality.
I found that the page scrolled normally when using the arrow keys and other navigation options.
I tried changing the page display options to enable scrolling but it made no difference.
I also tried adjusting the zoom level to fit height and fit width with no effect.

With NVDA it seems that using arrows and quick navigation keys is the best option.
Refer to the 6.1. Single Letter Navigation heading in the NVDA user manual for more details.
