Hello,

Has anyone tried the online web accessibility course offered by Georgia
Institute of Technology http://www.pe.gatech.edu/courses/web-accessibility.
I need to introduce a basic level accessibility course for web developers -
so wanted to get some feedback on this course.

Look forward to some valuable reviews?

Actually, I used to work at the office that produced this course, and
have had a look at it. However, I would LOVE to hear reviews from
actual students, as I suspect all the staff would.

The authors are the real deal as far as web accessibility & online
education - and I'm not just saying that because I worked there - and
I can guarantee that the information is solid and fairly current (it
was just updated to reflect WCAG 2.0 about 8 months ago). The folks
there are also likely to be quite responsive to suggestions for
improvements to the course, and they have produced other online
educational courses. When this course was initially produced they
were very active in the W3C-WAI and other standards efforts and in
studying best practices for online education; their research is now
focused on science education for people with disabilities & virtual
worlds, but they definitely have real technical competency in
accessibility and produce lots of accessible educational websites.
The office is also fully integrated into a rehabilitation research
place, which means that they have a really good perspective on actual
disabled people and how they use the web and on doing user testing.

That said, I would not plan to use this course on its own if you're in
fact needing to do developer EVANGELISM (that is, a sales job on the
value of accessibility) rather than straight education. Also, if you
need specialized topics such as Flash accessibility, I would recommend
supplementing the course with other resources. Remember that all
accessibility will be somewhat technology-specific - so if you use a
Java framework, you may need to introduce a toolkit for that to your
developers; if you're using a CMS like Drupal there are specific
strategies.

The $99 cost of the course is partially because they award
certification & CEUs through Georgia Tech's Continuing Ed, and the
reason that they do this is that people who are certified assistive
tech professionals can use it for certification. However, you should
remember that the certificate is nice and you may add it to your
resume, but in fact certifications don't really mean anything in web
accessibility (this is a caveat in case you have certifications in
security, compliance, or other fields where they do matter and are
approaching this in the same way).

Hi,

We are trying to hire a consulting agency for Web Accessibility and Section
508 compliance. In addition, we are also trying to hire our own ADA/web
accessibility expert.

This is what I need help with:

. For the consulting agency, we need to create a RFP (Request for
Proposal)/ SOW (statement of work). Do any of you have any idea as to where
I can find some information? We need the agency to review our courses and
technologies offered to students. An example of an RFP or SOW will be
great!!

. For the accessibility expert, I need to provide a list of skills,
experience, and education of the person we should look for. This will help
us determine the type of information we should put in our job description.

. Do you know of a web site that post web accessibility resumes or
jobs?

. Do you know or have any experience with web accessibility
consulting agencies?

Any help will be appreciated!!

Thanks

Giovanni.

Hi,

Another online video course you might want to consider is Think Vitamin
- Learn Accessibility.

Link to the Learn Accessibility Video Course: http://j.mp/accessvideos

"Think Vitamin" has made its Learn Accessibility Video Tutorial free.
The course teaches you how to make websites that are full accessible to
everybody, including those with disabilities. It teaches you
Accessibility from the basics through to advanced levels. It covers the
following areas in a series of lessons: Fundamentals, Websites, and Web
Apps.

We have reviewed this course and it gives a good foundation in
accessibility compliance for web developers.

Additionally, for a more comprehensive foundation in creating accessible
content and websites, you might want to look into Lynda Online Training
- Web Accessibility Principles

FYI - Lynda.com is an online training website that has hundreds of
online courses in a wide variety of areas ranging from web design to
Microsoft Office fundamentals. They are not free, but cost approximately
$25 to $35 per month for an individual for taking an unlimited number of
training courses.

Course Name: Web Accessibility Principles -
http://www.lynda.com/Dreamweaver-tutorials/web-accessibility-principles/
448-2.html

Course Summary - Accessibility on the web has been an issue for over a
decade, and it remains a crucial -but often overlooked - element of web
design. Instructor Zoe Gillenwater explains the concept of accessibility
as it applies to the web, and describes how it affects the audience. She
also covers how to set up accessibility testing, and how to apply
accessibility principles to new and existing sites using
standards-compliant markup and CSS. Exercise files accompany the
tutorials.

I hope that this information is of some use to you.
