Finally.

MS Office for Mac 2016 - August update includes the Accessibility Checker
that was previously available in Windows versions.

This report says it is available in Word, Excel and PowerPoint, but my
update today (dated Aug 6) only updated Word and Excel.

Find the AC under Review tab in the menu - sorry I don't see the keyboard
equivalent.

Confirming that Word and Excel for MSO for Mac 2016 updated (on Aug 6) and NOT PowerPoint (still using July update). So Accessibility Checker is still not available for PowerPoint in Mac.

Folks,

I really don't have the time to learn about this checker, but I do have a Mac book pro and the name caught my attention.

Can someone give me bullet points on what it does to see if it behooves me to have it? Thanks a bunch.

I am using MS Word for Mac, Version 15.25 (160806)

The AC is listed under Review on the Ribbon in the Word window. But under the Mac toolbar (at the top of the screen), it is listed under Tools. So it is in both places.

First, you need the latest version of MS Office (MSO) for Mac, which is the 2016 version, and you need the latest updates that came out a few days ago (August updates). If you subscribe to Office 365, you can install MSO on up to five devices (Macs, Windows and IOS devices or any combination) and they all update automatically. You may need to run the MS Update to ensure that you have the latest updates. BTW, the update for PowerPoint came out 2-3 days after the ones for Excel and Word.

Basically, the Accessibility Checker (AC) is a tool that reviews your document and cites issues related to accessibility following most of the standard WCAG rules (e.g., Headings, ALT description, etc.). There are some additional "Warning" things that MS has thrown in like "Repeated blank characters."

See "Guidance on Applying WCAG 2.0 to Non-Web Information and Communications Technologies (WCAG2ICT)": https://www.w3.org/TR/wcag2ict/

When you use the AC tool, a new window pops up with the list of Errors and Warnings, and when you click on the individual Error or Warning, a description appears below explaining (Why fix?) and the steps needed to mitigate the error.

The tool is good for training people who are new to accessible design and in enterprise situations where you know your documents are going public. It is particularly helpful with large documents when trying to find all of the glitches can take a long time.

The AC has been available in the Windows version of MSO since I think 2010, so it is long overdue in the Mac version.

Isn't it supposed to show the issues under the Info tab in Office 2013 for Windows?

JP, after you check the document, the Accessibility Checker pane is used to display the results. F6 can be used to navigate from the document area to this pane.

In Windows, the Accessibility report opens in a pane to the right of the document. Use F6 to move into it.

@Karen

Looks like you are in New Zealand - MS may have a different schedule for delivery for other countries (wild guess on my part).

IT is also possible that the AC only works with American English...

I'm in NZ and have the accessibility checker in Word for Mac 2016.

Karen, have you checked the "Join the Office Insider program..." checkbox
in the Microsoft AutoUpdate? As someone else mentioned, I had to select to
get Insider builds to get the AC.

I'm in NZ and have the accessibility checker in Word for Mac 2016.

Karen, have you checked the "Join the Office Insider program..." checkbox
in the Microsoft AutoUpdate? As someone else mentioned, I had to select to
get Insider builds to get the AC.

@Karen

Looks like you are in New Zealand - MS may have a different schedule for
delivery for other countries (wild guess on my part).

IT is also possible that the AC only works with American English...

Anyone know?

Can the new Word for Mac 2016 finally export tagged PDF files?

Sadly, not yet (on the desktop). :-(

I know, I know…

That said, if you have access to Adobe's online services (which comes with their subscription model for Acrobat), you can upload your well-structured Word file and get back a (reasonably) well-tagged PDF.

This link from Microsoft indicates that PDF tagging is available on the Mac version of Word 2016 build 15.23.1 and greater.

[quoted from link] I am happy to say that this feature is now available in Word 2016 for the MAC in builds 15.23.1 and greater. The currently release does not support any Far East languages or any languaages that are Right to Left. However, this is planned to be addressed in the next few updates.

Thanks for the correction!

I'm not sure it's really on the desktop - it seems one has to select the "online service" option in the Export dialog to get a tagged PDF.

Still.. it's progress for sure!

Yes, you have to use the online service, which is odd to me. I need to know
way more about what they do to use it on the Mac. I found that really odd
when I first saw it.

Cheers
