syncronize text and audio

for

Hi.

I'm working on a project where we need to syncronize text with audio.

We do not want to use video to play the audio and then captioning to provide
the text so this is not an option. Neither do we want to use flash or other
such "binary-blobs" (we use flash in the background to play the audio). We
want to use plain XHTML/Javascript/Dom.

What we want to do is provide the user with the usual controls
(play/stop/ff/rw/pause) and beneath the player he/she sees all the text that
is coming through the audio stream. In addition I want to have a marker to
highlight the words as they are spoken. (think ZoomText Document reader for
those who knows this application)

My question is: does it already exist a system that helps us so that what
mostly remains are the manual work of timing the audio with the
marker/highlight? If not, what do you see as suitable approach? We have been
sniffing on using XML to store the timing data and then use dom to update
marker position in relation to the time in the audio-file. Is this feasable?

Any hints will help!

Best Regards
