I think you should appeal to the sense of the web being a universal medium
for the exchange of information and not a technology dominated by a few
large companies. By creating valid documents you insure that your content
is available to a wider range of people (including people with
disabilities) and not just the subset of people who happen to use Internet
Explorer. The web is only democratic when every follows the rules of the
web (valid documents).
