We use a method demonstrated at the bottom of

fault.asp.
With some CSS and a <span> we provide linked file info to both sighted
readers and those using screen readers. We also note the root URL for
offsite links.
Screen readers users get all the info whether they're going through the
page or listing links. Sighted readers get the info because it's
readable but visually doesn't look like part of the link.
We use null alt text on the PDF icon because it's solely for sighted
readers.
If a file is over 400KB we use Numion's calculator at
http://numion.com/Calculators/Time.html. We add 20% overhead and round
up for whole minutes at 56 Kbps.
It's fairly simple but your content providers may not be up to it
without some training. I don't know anything about Adobe Contribute.
