Requiring radio buttons

Hi all, I'm retrofitting a booking form and have to deal with validation of
radio buttons, where there is no default selection. There are a number of
code examples floating around on the web. I tested a few approaches and
documented these at https://codepen.io/collection/XyJmjd/. The results
weren't particularly encouraging. If anyone sees any glaring errors could
they please fork and post the corrected version.
