I think your idea of using positional CSS to format a definition list into something that resembles a family tree chart is good. I was focused on how it would render aurally, and in a text browser, where in the latter table rows wrap incomprehensibly, but a list structure holds up much better. For CSS-off presentation, it might be necessary to highlight some of the terms, and/or parts of the "definitions" using EM, STRONG, or BIG so the levels of the hierarchy are visually clearer, when the positioning afforded by CSS is not available. For visual display there is nothing that can be made quite as clear as a well drawn graphic, but the list version can serve as part of a longdesc or 'd'-link description of the graphic, or as an alternative for a table, if Andrew still wants to try it that way.
