Absolutely Positioned Text and Screen Readers

When a screen reader encounters html elements that have been absolutely
positioned by CSS, how do they handle that? I'm particularly interested in
the content. Basically, if I have content in a span that is absolutely
positioned say -5000px off the screen, will the screen reader not "see"
that, or does it read the text content in the order it appears in the
(x)html?

TIA,
