Screen Readers: Best Practices with Transcripts and Symbols?

Hi there!

In my work as an instructional designer in higher education, I have an
opportunity to improve accessibility in online courses.



Right now, I'm reviewing transcripts created for media pieces. Specifically,
looking at symbols used in html and things like up arrows and down arrows.
My time on task is limited or I'd do the testing myself (but no access to
JAWS).



I'm looking for resources to help. For example, this one from Deque - dated
2014:

My thoughts - better to use the words rather than rely on the symbol being
read correctly. Anything to make the experience better.
