A single textbox is as accessible as a date picker, arguably more so. However, the argument against it is that it is much more prone to incorrect data entry, so it is necessary to include more error handling. That's not a big issue when starting from scratch, but it's more of an issue when you are asking someone to rip out a component that already works, especially if you are not going to pay them for that work.
