PowerPoint shapes' alt text

Good afternoon,
I'm struggling with a PowerPoint file. There are knowledge check answer slides that use a red box to designate the correct answer on the screen - I have added alt text to the box (ie "Red box highlighting the correct answer, A. True.") and placed in the proper reading order but NVDA does not read this alt text at all. It's happening on all knowledge check answer slides in the file.

Can anyone explain what's going on here?
