Thanks for the recommendation for Foxyvoice! It works, although the
default "Microsoft Sam" voice is a bit primitive; However I found that
you can download the MSSAPI SDK (68MB)[0] and get additional voices -
"Microsoft Mike" and "Microsoft Mary" are somewhat clearer. This, with
Foxyvoice, gives (for me anyway) the best linearized text-to-speech
picture yet of my sites. FANGS is good too, as it emulates the Links
and Headings lists in screenreader software.
I was not able to get Foxyvoice to read FANGS output, but they're still
good free tools for this.
