Hi all,

somehow I've managed to start a trend on blogger of sighted folks who
raise guide dog puppies wanting to add image descriptions, after
reading my posts about how much I appreciate them. Several of them are
having troubles, and I don't know where to point them for help. I know
in Blogger there is an edit html area for photos, but I have no
photos, so I can't go look at the code. Eventually I'll be doing
photos too, and I also want to know how to do this.

Does anyone know of a good website that novice people can use to make
sense of how to add alt tags? I'm so touched they all want to learn,
and several of them are getting frustrated.

Any help would be appreciated! Thanks!

I'm sure everyone has their favorite "how to add alt attribute" page. This one is pretty good: http://www.jimthatcher.com/webcourse2.htm

Wonderful, thank you. I think I'll see what pages I get, and then
compile it into a blog post, thank you!

For me, acceptance was the first step towards recovery.

Sadly, the only way to still add the ALT attribute to images in Blogger is
to insert the image and then go to the HTML version of the blog entry and
manually change the code. Blogger, by default, enters the NULL Alt for all
images that are posted. You need to find the ALT="" and insert the
appropriate description. Nice tutorial here:
http://photographyblography.blogspot.com/2009/08/how-to-add-alt-text-to-your
-blogger.html

WordPress has a more better way of adding ALT information when the image is
first inserted.

I started to write a long-winded comment about "when to ALT and when to use
the NULL Alt" - but I decided against it. Save that for another thread, in a
off-list conversation or in some other forum.

Yeah several have explained how to do this in blogger but a lot of
people are still having difficulties. I bet this link will be most
helpful, thank you! There are a lot who do wonderful jobs in blogger,
so I know its fairly simple, but I figure if these people are doing
this for people like me, I want to help make it easier. Thank you!

Yeah I always add the image, and then that takes me back to the raw text of the post, and then I squish some alt text into the quotes. But I'm an old person who still likes to look at code now and then.

Carin,

Yeah it seems pretty straightforward, adding the text between the
quotation marks. Steve pointed out that some people are linking from
photbucket pages.

Does anyone know about that? Adding descriptions when linking from
photobucket or the like? I wonder if there's a place in photobucket or
flicker to add the descriptions, so when you link to them, they're
already there?

Hi. I just joined the list, but I had to speak. I know for sure that in blogger, there is a place that says alt="" If you notice, on my blog, all the Trixie's brain posts have a picture that says graphic Trixie speaks. That's where I put the alt text.

I don't know about other sites to learn, off the top of my head, about alt text, but I know at least that much.

And hi.

I will have to amend my last message regarding Blogger.

If you are using the "new" text editor, Blogger has removed the NULL Alt
information from your posts. So users will need more knowledge about HTML to
post images correctly. In other words, Blogger has become LESS accessible in
the new design.

I suggest encouraging people to use the "old" text editor which still adds
the NULL to all image inserts making it easier for those to want to add
appropriate ALT text. In the default mode, the image will be ignored by the
screen reader.

That didn't work either, its telling me the page you are looking for
in the blog does not exist. Hmmm.
