Two type faces designed specifically for the screen are Verdana (a sans
serif) and Georgia (serif).

My understanding is that sans serif is recommended for body text because
on-screen type has a rather limited number of dpi (compared to printed
type), so the serif features are created to use a greater percentage of the
pixels in order to be recognizable visual cues.
