Subject: Is USPS website inaccessible?

Hello Everyone,
I am a jaws screen reader user. Currently I have jaws 13 and win 7 OS
on my computer. I have been trying to schedule package pick up by
using USPS website for couple of days. I am having a big trouble with
The form fields on the website. It is very hard to focus on certain
edit fields to type the required info. I tried both IE and Firefox and
nothing changed. The callender, where you select pick up date is also
not accessible. the available days are listed in a table as links and
It is impossible to activate a link by using keyboard. So I had to ask
a sighted person to click on the date I want by using mouse. However,
the problem continues even after activating the link. Then it is very
difficult to go back to the actual form. Also when I bring up the list
of form fields by using Ins+f5 I noticed that the dates in the
callender is not labeled. The callender key is also totally visual.
They used colors to show holidays, available days etc but there is no
alt tag for those as well. I am wondering if I am not doing the right
thing to navigate the site or it is really inaccessible. I really
apriciate if someone more knowledgable could check the site and give
feedback. Here is the link:

USPS is a crucial organization for many of us including blind people.
So if there is something wrong with their website I'd like to let
their webmaster know.
Thanks for all your help,

Ahmet

First, all fedeal Federal government Internet sites should be accessible
because of Section 508. Most sites actually actually have a Section 508
link in their footer though the USPS site does not.

Secondly, the site worked fairly well for me with Firefox and JAWS 14. All
of the items in the calendar grid have off-screen information about the
status of the day, and clicking the tab key goes to the next available
date. The fact that they used a grid instead of a table confuses jaws 13 a
little.

I am also using Windows 7 and JAWS 13 and am probably seeing one of the problems that Ahmet is seeing. As I 'arrow' through the page, the focus keeps on jumping back to the M.I. textbox, which is for the Middle Initial. I have no idea why it keeps doing this, especially since it is not a mandatory field (not that that should cause it to behave that way). I have not been through the whole page, partially because I don't have time and partially because it is so horrible.

Hi Jonathan and Steve,
Thank you guys for checking it out. I am so frustrated because I need
to use this site pretty often. It sounds like the fastest solution
would be upgrading to jaws 14, which I cannot do it soon. So I'd like
to let their webmaster know about the issue. Hopefully it would not
take them too long to fix the website.
Thanks again for testing it.

What would happen if you created an account on the site? That should prevent you from having to enter everything at least.
