Sort of a policy question:
I'm curious whether any of your companies or institutions support web accessibility through your marketing and communication units? We tend to think of these groups as more content-oriented-marketing and branding-but it seems like they also are well-placed to influence the way we conceive and design our top-level web assets, at least to some degree.
Has anyone here received support or guidance from their marketing or media groups on providing accessible web assets?

Todd,
Accessibility is built into everything we do. Our company has a policy that everything we produce has to be accessible, from internal employee communications to anything that is released to the public. Part of how we achieve this is to require all staff members to take our basic accessible communication/document training when they start employment with us.

Our web staff also receive specific accessibility design training and work very closely with our Accessibility Specialists to ensure they stay on track.

Todd:

Humana's web accessibility program was conceived and built through the
marketing department. For exactly the reasons that you stated, this helped
in influencing design decisions and in identifying projects earlier in the
life cycle. The program ultimately really flourished when it was viewed as
a shared responsibility and enterprise focus, but for its first few years,
the program was funded and managed through marketing.
