Hi all,

we use MathJax for our MathML math. JAWS text output is just one letter X,
regardless of the math content. JAWS versions 2021, 2022, 2023, and 2024
all do this. The speech output is perfect. NVDA has no issue in the text
output as long as the access8math addon is installed. VoiceOver is also
fine. Even something as simple as the following example that just has the
number 4 in MathML outputs X in JAWS:

<math><mn>4</mn></math>

Is there something special that we need to do for JAWS?

Thanks,
Mike

Mike,

Don't know if this will be helpful in troubleshooting but about a year ago I was exploring NVDA to access math content and was finding it act oddly on navigating equations. A colleague who is a full time screen reader user and was a math major pointed out to me that different speech engines can play into this. I think that I'd liked the voice of Microsoft's voice over say one that was a default with NVDA. While the Microsoft one sounded great navigating web content, it was leaving out parts of equations. When I switched to another, it read equation components correctly.

Likely someone else will have some clues as to why JAWS is only reading the way it is for you versus NVDA.

Good morning Mike
I don't know if this will help you because I really do not do much with math myself.
But the most recent update on Jaws 2024
Open the jaws menu go to options and then go down to the early adopter program hit enter on that.
There's a checkbox That will enable Jaws to read math content.
And then under that there's also the picture smart checkbox which is a blind person I think is a game changer for describing photos.
But go in there check that out and hopefully it will help

I hope some of the following resources will help.
Here is a Jaws webinar https://www.freedomscientific.com/webinars/jaws-math-and-braille/
Here is what appears to be a good resource for Math content: https://yourtechvision.com/
Other resources were mentioned in the webinar, so check them out.

Mention is made of the jaws math editor which you need to access in order to view the math equations.

Even when trying the demos on the MathJax page, the text output from JAWS
is just the letter X. The demo page is at
https://mathjax.github.io/MathJax-demos-web/ . Very strange.

Mike
in the demo page,
put the focus on an equation
open the context menu for math jax,
down arrow to accessibility,
right arrow to open the sub menu,
down arrow to activate, press the space bar.
Refresh the page.
then you have to tab between the math objects

Thank you, Jim! That did it. I'll add that to our math tips for assistive
tech users.
