NON CLASSIFIÉ / UNCLASSIFIED

Is there a good way to insure that table captions are provided for Jaws users when listing the tables in a document?

I am aware of the alt text tab of the table properties, but I am noticing that the language for the table is not being used when presenting this information.
I am also noticing that if a caption is provided above the table that Jaws does not always use the information when the tables are listed.

Is there something wrong with the caption style or the placement that might account for this?

Thanks for any feedback on this question.

Hi David,

I do not fully comprehend what you are questioning here. In your first paragraph, what do you mean by:
"I am noticing that the language for the table is not being used when presenting this information."
What do you mean by "language"? Are you referring to language of parts?

Also, what do you mean by listed?
I am also noticing that if a caption is provided above the table that Jaws does not always use the information when the tables are "listed".

Are you referring to the JAWS script that lists the various tables in a Word document? CTRL + Insert + t?

Interesting David. So it is a failure of language of parts. I happened to speak French. Are you using the Vocalizer Expressive voices? I use those for Arabic English and French, since I am trilingual.

Is it possible that you can save the file as an HTML one and review the table tags? I have found that this helps tremendously identify if it is word or JAWS doing that.

As far as the CTRL + Insert + t functionality, JAWS and NVDA work differently with Word. To accommodate JAWS make sure under the Alt tab under Table Properties to include the table description in the "Description" field as well as the "Title" field.

I am using Office 365 with the latest update along with JAWS 2025 the December release. I tested both the Title and Description fields individually and JAWS announced them properly. I do know in previous versions of JAWS that was not the case. That is why I make it a habit to fill out both fields under the Alt tab.

Which version of Office and JAWS are you using?
