Hi all,

I was hoping to do grocery deliver with Safeway, but I can't access
the register page. I remember some months ago someone mentioning a
store here, was it Safeway? I need to know if this is just an Apple
issue. Can someone with Jaws check out safeway.com and try to click
the delivery link right at the top?

I'm so disappointed. Grocery deliver would be great for me. I don't
want to pictch a fit until I know if its all screenreaders.

Thanks,
Randi

Randi,

"Grocery Delivery Link" is the second thing read by JAWS 9.0 on MS Windows
Vista with IE7 on safeway.com

Right, for me it wasn't accessible at all. I called corporate, and
they gave me the accessible site, shop.safeway.com/access. Trying it
now. Should have made the call before ramblind here ;)

Wow, they did a crappy job on that site; table-based layouts, inline styles,
vertical bar characters separating links, etc.

So that accessible version requires registration, sign-up and signing in!

Is that normal ? I thought the US had these tough laws about web
accessibility (I don't live there)

That site is just for online shopping and delivery, which you need to be
registered to do. I had a home shopping account with the standard Safeway
site, and it logged me right in.

Yes, this has been quite the complicated experience. After I
registered at shop.safeway.com/access, I tried to get in and shop and
it kept taking me to the register page. I had to call back, and get
the address to actually shop, which is shop.safeway.com/access/
default.asp. It doesn't take you there by default once you've actually
registered, and was not included in the welcome email.

I worry that most people would get frustrated and give up, rather than
keeping on it and calling. Whey they don't automatically take you to
the right site, I have no idea.

Stephan, it has to register, because this is for the home dilivery. On
the main site, you can browse without registering.

Is it me, or should this not be so complicated? Is it me, or should
they have the accessible link somehwere on the main page? I don't feel
like I should have had to call to get this all to work. Now I will try
the shopping...I wonder how that will be.

It's not you!
Sounds like Safeway didn't QC this portion of their website for the user's
experience.

Sometimes we sighted web developers need to be blindfolded to realize what
happens to our users, and other times we need our hands tied behind our
backs. <g>

Let's hope you don't starve, Randi, before you finally get your food
delivered!

Is Safeway the only grocery store in your area that delivers? We
don't have Safeway, we have PeaPod part of Stop and Shop
www.peapod.com
I have no idea if Peapod is any more accessible than Safeway is.

The most web-specific laws apply to government sites. How much
corporate sites must comply with them is still a question working it's
way through the court system.

Other general laws about disabled access may be applicable too, but
again it's a question that is currently being litigated in several
high-profile cases.

Hello:

Randy, you might want to be aware that the "accessible" version of
Safeway's site lacks some of the features of the less accessible
one. for example, when I once tried it, it was harder to see the
sales. Maybe they've fixed that.

I dont tend to like "accessible" versions of sites since I don't find
that they're maintained. By the time I knew of the accessible one, I
already had some tricks for using the regular version sorted.

Once you've ordered a couple of times, you'll be able to use your
previous lists, and that may speed you.

On the normal site, for example, I sometimes add my whole previous
list to my shopping cart, then go through my cart to delete what I
don't need, and finally add anything new to my cart.

I use the regular Safeway interface all the time with
Window-Eyes. It's surely not easy, but it's far from the worst site
I've ever tried to use. It's the kind of site that becomes faster to
use with practice.

You might want to join a list where other blind Web surfers
participate, so you can learn some Safeway site tips. There are a
couple of lists for blind Mac users, such as the MacVisionaries list,
for example, where you might find some VoiceOver-centric tips.

Good luck.

Haha!! Well after much trial and tribulation, my groceries will be
delivered on Monday. There were issues that I had to call about
because the accessible site was acting up, so they had to push the
order through on the phone. Wow. But so far it looks like it will work.

Nope we don't have those here. Safeway is the only one. Seems like it
might just work, we shall see if i feel like doing it again though haha.

Hi Jennifer. I am a member of Mac Vissionaires but haven't been there
in awhile. I've got a Windows user telling me that Jaws users use the
Safeway site all the time, and that this is just a Mac issue. I'm sure
getting sick of that...ah well. The accessible site worked just fine,
and it shows the price specials and things. The only issue is there's
no way to enter coupons and promotional codes yet, so you have to have
customer service refund that. I don't do really detailed shopping, so
for now this is great, and I certainly commend Window Eyes for
handling the main Safeway site, wow wow wow haha!
